It’s hard to believe it has been nearly five years since we began writing Ghosts of Saint-Pierre in the spring of 2017. But now it’s back from our editor and we’ve had the French and Kreyole phrases vetted, and we are very happy with the results.
What’s next? That’s the big question, and the hardest part of this journey. Should we try to find an independent press to publish it? Or should we publish it ourselves? A well-known small press would give it some legitimacy, and they could share the burden of getting it before reviewers and placed for sales. But it could take up to two years to get it out the door, and it would still likely be up to us to actually sell it. On the other hand, we have experience with the mechanics of publishing and we know how to create a beautiful book. We could produce it and have it available this year. We could keep a much higher percentage of the sales cost. The question is, would we be able to put as many out into the world as a small press publisher?
We believe in this book, so we want to do it right. This is the dilemma of publishing in these years. As I’ve said, it’s the hardest part.
